Cork Gutter Repairs — Sorted Properly, First Time

Cork is one of the wettest cities in Ireland. The Atlantic weather systems that roll in off the coast mean our gutters work harder than almost anywhere else in the country — and when they stop working properly, the consequences show up fast.

Water pouring down external walls, green staining on render, damp getting into the fabric of the building, and in serious cases, damage to foundations.

At Hallmark Roofing, we carry out gutter repairs, gutter cleaning, and full gutter replacements across Cork city and county. We work on all gutter types — uPVC, aluminium, and cast iron — on everything from modern estates to period properties in Cork city centre. Whatever the problem, we'll inspect it free of charge, tell you honestly what it needs, and fix it properly.

No call-out fees. No hidden extras. No pressure to replace when a repair will do the job.

5 Signs Your Gutters Need Attention

Most gutter problems are visible long before they cause serious damage — if you know what to look for. Here are the most common warning signs we encounter on Cork properties:

1. Water overflowing during rainfall If water is cascading over the front or back of your gutters during rain rather than flowing to the downpipe, the system is either blocked, misaligned, or undersized. This is the most common call we receive and is almost always fixable without a full replacement.

2. Visible sagging or pulling away from the fascia Gutters that are visibly drooping or separating from the fascia board have either failed brackets or a fascia that has begun to rot behind the gutter. Left unattended, the whole section can come away — particularly in high winds.

3. Leaking joints The most common single repair we carry out. Joints between gutter sections fail as the rubber seals age and dry out, allowing water to drip or stream down the wall below. The staining this causes is unsightly but the hidden damage to the wall behind is the bigger concern.

4. Green or black staining on external walls Persistent moisture running down an external wall causes green algae and black mould staining. This is a sign that water has been escaping from the gutter system — either through a joint, a crack, or an overflow — for some time.

5. Water pooling at the base of the house If you're noticing damp at the base of external walls or in a ground-floor room adjacent to an external wall, a failed gutter or blocked downpipe may be directing water straight down against the building. This is one of the more serious consequences of ignored guttering and can eventually affect the foundations.

What Happens If You Ignore a Gutter Problem

A dripping gutter joint seems like a minor annoyance. In Cork's persistent wet climate it rarely stays minor for long.

Water running repeatedly down an external wall saturates the render and pointing, allowing moisture to penetrate into the wall cavity. Over time this causes internal damp on the walls and ceilings of the rooms behind, which leads to mould growth, damaged plasterwork, and in serious cases, damage to structural timbers.

Water pooling at the base of a wall — caused by a blocked downpipe or disconnected drain — can eventually undermine the mortar in the foundation courses and cause cracking and movement in the wall above.

The cost of repairing a leaking gutter joint is typically €100–€200. The cost of replastering a damp internal wall, treating mould, and redecorating a room can run to several thousand euros. The maths is straightforward — small gutter problems are always worth fixing early.

Gutter Materials — Which Type Does Your Property Have?

uPVC Guttering By far the most common gutter material on Cork properties built after the 1970s. uPVC is lightweight, low-maintenance, and available in a range of profiles and colours. It clips together using rubber-sealed joints that typically last 10–15 years before the seals begin to fail. When sections crack or joints repeatedly fail, replacement is straightforward and cost-effective. uPVC is the right choice for the vast majority of modern and semi-modern properties across Cork.

Aluminium Guttering More durable than uPVC and increasingly popular on higher-specification new builds and renovations. Aluminium gutters can be fabricated seamlessly on-site in long runs — eliminating joints entirely and dramatically reducing the most common source of leaks. They're more expensive than uPVC but carry a significantly longer lifespan. We supply and fit aluminium guttering systems across Cork.

Cast Iron Guttering Found on older Cork properties and largely original to houses built before the 1950s. Cast iron is heavy, durable, and when properly maintained lasts for generations. The key word is maintained — neglected cast iron rusts at joints and where paint has failed, and once sections crack they cannot be patched effectively. We carry out specialist cast iron repairs and restoration across Cork, with particular experience on period properties in the city centre and older suburbs.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the problem. A simple cleaning or resealing a joint is very inexpensive. A full replacement depends on the size of the house and the type of guttering you choose. We provide free quotes, so you’ll know the exact cost before we start any work. We also have a blog post on gutter repair prices.

This usually means the alignment (or "fall") of the gutter is wrong, or the gutter isn't big enough for the roof size. We can re-hang the gutters to ensure a proper slope towards the downpipe, or upgrade you to "Deep Flow" gutters which can handle a higher volume of rainwater.

We often recommend it. If we are taking the old gutters down, it is the perfect time to inspect the fascia boards. If they are rotten wood, attaching new gutters to them is a bad idea. We can cap over or replace the wood with uPVC for a complete, maintenance-free roofline solution.

Yes, we can. We understand that for many older properties in Cork City and Cobh, keeping the original aesthetic is important. We can clean, seal, and repaint cast iron gutters, or source heritage-style aluminium replacements that look traditional but function like modern gutters.

We recommend cleaning your gutters at least once a year, ideally in late autumn after the leaves have fallen. If your home is near large trees (especially pine trees), you may need them cleaned twice a year to prevent blockages.
